Charlene Nimmons, founder of Public Housing Communities, Incorporated and a public housing resident, was interviewed on June 12, 2018 by Pat Kiernan of NY1 News to share her comments on the $1 billion settlement with federal prosecutors over the “systemic mismanagement” at NYCHA and the appointment of a federal monitor. Nimmons states that there is much to be done; however, getting things repaired, taking care of the backlog, is top priority to ensure the health and safety of the residents. She further states that fixing things is only a start because there are also other opportunities. She believes that whoever the federal monitor is should also review HUD regulations to see how they function in relation to economic opportunities for residents. Nimmons’ organization promotes economic development for public housing residents in her community.
